Gulu University Promotes Fourteen Academic Staff

Gulu: Gulu University has promoted fourteen academic staff to positions of Professors, Associate Professors, and Senior Lecturers.

These promotions saw two academic staff promoted from positions of Associate Professors to Professors, six from Senior Lecturers to Associate Professors, and the remaining six promoted from Lecturers to Senior Lecturers.

Prof George Ladaah Openjuru, Vice Chancellor of Gulu University, thanked the promoted workers for their hard work and commitment when he handed over appointment letters from the University Council Boardroom on Wednesday, September 25th, 2024.

“I encourage you to continue with your hard work, commitment, tolerance, and dedication to excellence,” Prof. Openjuru stated during the ceremony to give over promoting letters to the 14 employees.

The VC stated that new positions came with new duties, and that promoted employees should work harder, encourage one another, publish more articles, inspire others, and mentor the next generation to engage in excellent research initiatives.


Prof. Wilfred Lajul, who was promoted from Associate Professor to Full Professor, expressed similar sentiments to the VC about assisting fellow faculty and students to prosper in the academic environment.

“In academics, there is no rivalry, only supplementation. We supplement one another, and this is the type of assistance we require. We have a great responsibility to the younger generations by devoting our valuable time to them. “These people require a lot of help,” says Prof. Lajul.
He also stated that in order to propel the university to the top, scholars need write more articles, both individually and cooperatively.

Publications can be completed individually or as a group. Let’s investigate the two possibilities. “This is what makes the university’s name rise and shine,” he adds.

Mr. David Obol Otori, the Gulu institution Secretary, thanked the staff for their patience with the institution throughout the promotion process, particularly those who were recommended for promotions in the previous financial year.


“The promotional process is somewhat lengthy beginning with the application process, but the reason for the delay was due to an inadequate wage. Last year, all public universities harmonized their nomenclatures and compensation structures, necessitating additional resources. So, we were unable to implement the suggested officers’ promotions promptly,” Mr. Otori explains.

He further said the university was able to carry out implementations of in the current financial year for those recommended and moving them to the new salary scale after engaging the Ministry of Finance and getting supplementary on the wage bill.

The Gulu University Chief Human Resource Management, Ms. Christine Immaculate Apio appreciated the Human Resource team for working tirelessly in vetting the promoted staff whose applications for promotions went through rigorous processes before the vetting committee.

“I thank the vetting Committee because without their efforts, we wouldn’t be able to have this kind of occasion. I thank office of the US and the strategic leadership of the Vice Chancellor”, Ms. Apio shares her gratitude.

Mrs. Theresa Mary Obbo, the Gulu University Chair Council congratulated the promoted staff upon the milestone in their professional journey.

“This is a clear sign of personal-professional growth and development. Council and our great institution are proud of you,” Mrs. Obbo shared her heartfelt congratulations.
